Mission

Determining the causes of civil aviation accidents and incidents, whose technical research were applicable, and recommend appropriate actions aimed at preventing its occurrence in the future, to promote safety in that area.

JIAAC's Duties

      • Developing the investigation of civil aviation accidents that occur.
      • Notifying other civil aviation authorities and the ICAO of accidents and incidents in accordance with ICAO Annex 13.
      • Determining or approving, as appropriate, the probable causes of the investigated accidents / incidents.
      • Recommending the relevant agencies effective actions to prevent the future occurrence of accidents / incidents similar to those investigated; promoting them within the civil aviation community and in public and private institutions related to the aerial activity or likely to exert influence on it.
      • Maintaining the relations, as set forth under Annex 13 to the Agreement on International Civil Aviation, with the ICAO and the agencies responsible for the investigation of civil aviation accidents in other countries.
      • Should the case arise, integrating, as necessary, the investigators staff with experts belonging to any of the agencies under the Air Regions Command. For the purposes set forth and without detriment to their duties, such personnel shall technically report to the JIAAC until the completion of its mission.
      • Seeking the participation of specialists inside and outside
        the Air Force in order to fulfill its mission. To this purpose, when appropriate, it will propose the recruitment of personnel to obtain specific advice
      • Compiling the information about civil aviation accidents in digital format.
      • Publishing and disseminating, as a contribution to aviation safety, the compilation of reports and statistics on civil aviation accidents / incidents, together with their respective comments.
      • As occasion requires, offering courses in order to train the specialized personnel in aircraft accident investigation, and proposing the appointment of staff to provide advanced training courses.

  • Now available "Rules of Civil Aviation Accident Investigations" (RIAAC), where all aviation users can make suggestions or give their opinion, before its official publication, which will certainly help to improve quality and safety. (Download file here).
  • At present, the JIAAC has implemented the ECCAIRS notification and database system, in accordance with ICAO’s recommendations.
  • At the beginning of 2008, reports of aviation accidents will be published on the site. It will be a copy of the Final Report of the investigation, and not only an abstract.
  • The latest issue of the newsletter of Civil Aviation Accidents, No. 37 was published. At the moment, it is available only in digital format (download) printed version.
